"July is Sarcoma Awareness month. Only 1% of the cancers diagnosed in adults are Sarcomas (15% for children) each year, so spread the word."

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month and we plan to kick it off by providing a brief definition with statistics and giving a quick glimpse into how this disease impacts adolescents or young adults by sharing some of our daughter’s thoughts as she battled this aggressive cancer for four years.

According to the Sarcoma Foundation of America, “sarcomas are cancers of the bone and connective tissue. More than 16,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and nearly 7,000 people die each year from sarcoma in the United States."

As you know, hugabox gives 90% of its proceeds to sarcoma cancer research centers across the United States (Dana Farber in Boston, Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City, Fred Hutch in Seattle, Huntsman in Utah, UC Davis in California and the Cleveland Clinic. Here’s why...

In 2010, our daughter who was 22 years old at the time was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma. It’s an aggressive cancer that easily spreads to other parts of the body and the lungs if treatments (surgery, radiation and chemotherapy) fail. Her tumor started in the pelvic bone. Before she was diagnosed, she was limping and feeling immense pain. She relapsed shortly after her 8 months of treatment at which time she underwent a partial hemipelvectomy (her leg was spared, but they removed part of her pelvic on the right side). Eventually the cancer metastasized to her lungs and she passed away on August 9, 2014. In her own words, here are her thoughts as she lived with cancer as a young adult.

"I seriously have the best friends and family in the world. Everyone has been so beyond supportive, which I appreciate tremendously. Not only have they been keeping me entertained through treatment either in person, by giving me a book, magazine or DVD or emailing/texting me to let me know that they're thinking of me, but on May 7th my friends are running the Big Lake Half Marathon in New Hampshire for Ewing's Sarcoma! Although I cannot personally participate in the running portion I plan to attend to cheer them on!"

"Family means so much to me and I am so grateful to have them in my life. I can honestly say that I would not have been able to persevere through this two-year battle without them. Cancer is not a battle fought by one, but a battle fought in some way or another by all"

"Some might think that losing my hair again was the worst part of being re-diagnosed, but for me the worst part is being afraid that I am going to miss out on something either in going out with my friends, getting a promotion at work or going on a fun vacation."

"Lately people have been calling me a"hero" or "warrior" or saying that I am the strongest person they know. Honestly, there are times when I am tired of being strong and I just want to curl up in a little ball and forget about everything happening around me. So often I read people Facebook statuses saying things like- "I had the the worst day ever. My car got towed. I was late for class and it was pouring down rain." I can't help but get angry when I read these, thinking if you only knew what a bad day was! I would love to have a day like their's. A day where the worst think in the world is to have my car towed. I would love to be able to focus all my anger towards monetary or inconvenient things, but I can't because I am too busy focusing on the bigger picture: getting this cancer out of my body."

"It's beginning to sink in that I am "running" my first 5K tomorrow...on crutches. Did I mention that I am in the middle of a chemo cycle right now? This should be interesting!

Last year hugabox transferred $13,000 to 6 major sarcoma cancer research centers and this year we are on target to transfer even more. Thanks to all of you for purchasing a hugabox care package! As a result, we are giving back and helping the next generation.
